RMAX Sambo seminar review:

well the seminar went really well - we had a good group of people turn up to train and we covered a lot of material in such a small period of time. By greatest regret was the lack of time to really get into more detail. Still, in conjunction with www.flowacademy.com.au we will be bringing Scott out to Australia more often for more seminars.

We covered a whole bunch of work:

  1. Ground flow drills (which were very similar to work covered by Alex Kostic and Kevin Secours - but with a few new drills to add to the flow)
  2. Using the wave principle to apply to boxing work for MMA - demonstrates how systema wave principles can be used in other martial arts - very cool stuff. Fairly intuitive and certainly work I have played around with myself, but still nice to practice.
  3. Flowing from a striking routine to a clinch for a take down - also we discussed clinching/take down distancing.
  4. Breathing as a technique to warm up AND to recover - the "resett button" breathing technique.
  5. the Rmax Sambo Saddle position and it's "opportunities" - this was the meat of why we were there and it was a lot of fun.

Fortunately, we had a mix of people including some experienced grapplers. Seeing the effectiveness of the Sambo techniques has convinced me to pursue this style of Sambo - in conjunction with jujitsu in order to have a fully developed ground game - and a few extra tricks up my sleave that are relatively unknown in Australia.

On a personal note I am undertaking the Rmax Sambo course and I will also be pursuing (over the next couple of years) accreditation in all the other areas of Scott's work  - in ADDITION to persisting with Systema under Vladimir Vassiliev. I personally feel the two "flavours" work well and have so much in common that they are complementary. I hope everyone who trains with me keeps an open mind and that here in Australia good Systema continues to grow!

What is RMAX Sambo

Russian Sambo is one of the top fighting disciplines to be represented in the realm of mixed martial arts competitions because of its real-world simplicity and toughness exemplified by fearsome fighters such as Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.

Sambo is a highly effective and popular grappling art that was created in Russia around the 1930's as a mix of Judo, Jujitsu and traditional Russian martial arts. Today it has various "flavours" like Sports Sambo and Combat Sambo. Scott Sonnon has taken his mastery of Sambo and many other martial arts and developed a training program that applies Sambo successfully to MMA competition:

"Although you can choose to learn Sambo as a stand-along fighting system effectively, the real uniqueness of our program is how you can integrate it into diverse skill set needs mixed martial arts competition. It’s the perfect complement to Jiujitsu, which specializes in upper-half positional fighting. Adding Coach Sonnon’s Sambo as your lower-half positional fighting strategy doubles your effectiveness on the ground, without sacrificing positional dominance typical of traditional leg lock attacks."  (extract from http://www.mmasaddle.com/?page_id=18)
